Mary Margaret Void

June 17, 1919 — January 31, 2014

Mary Margaret Grayton Void sprung into this world full of joy on June 17, 1919, born to the late Rev. Johnny and Robesine Grayton. On January 31, 2014, she slept away peacefully to her heavenly home. Mary grew up in Santee, SC and was educated there in the public school system. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and became a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. While there, Mary was united in holy matrimony to the late Robert (Johnny) Void. Out of that union came four beautiful children. Later in life, Mrs. Void became a member of Providence Baptist Church where she served on various auxiliary boards for many, many years. As a devoted Christian, she also sang with several gospel groups in church and around the community. She was always a devoted member to her pastor and ministries. Mrs. Void loved to cook and was a great chef in several restaurants around the Santee area throughout her life. With her ever loving nature, Mary also worked as a caring companion for many years. Mrs. Void lived a very active and independent life well into her late 80s. She was later relocated to Bridgeport, CT in 2007 to live with her daughter Mattie and be loved and cared for by her entire northern family. In Bridgeport, Mary continued her faithfulness for Christ by joining the English Chapel Cathedral of Miracles Church where she was affectionately known as "Mother Void". In addition to her husband, Mary was also predeceased by her son Tommie Void and three sisters, Martha Hillard (her twin sister), Eartha Evans and Corine Dubose. She leaves to cherish her memory: three children; Eartha (George) McCord of Stratford, CT; George (Betty) Void of Washington DC and Mattie Mitchell of Bridgeport, CT. Nine grandchildren: George "Orlando" (Maya) McCord of Hamden, CT; Stephanie Mitchell of Bridgeport, CT; Linda Brown of Washington DC; Devele McCord of Stratford, CT; Monique Mitchell of Norristown, PA; Jeannette Bradley of Santee, SC; George, Angela and Daryl Void all of Baltimore. Nine great grandchildren: Whitney Mitchell of Bridgeport, CT; Adrena Void of Santee, SC; Isaiah McCord of Stratford, CT; Ryleigh Drye, Brielle, Mason and Tori McCord all of Hamden, CT; Imania and Halima Sheikh of Washington DC. Mary also leaves sweet memories with three god children and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. The family is saddened at the loss of their matriarch but is blessed to have such a wonderful legacy to carry on.
