Maria T. Rivera

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Maria T. Rivera, affectionately known as “Tere,” on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, at the age of 81 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on October 16th, 1943, Maria was the beloved daughter of the late Aurelio and Benita Rivera of Utuado, Puerto Rico. One of eight siblings, she was lovingly raised alongside Ricardo, Jaime, Juan "Anibal", Roberto, Olga, Carmen "Yiya", and Elba.

Maria moved to Bridgeport, CT in the 1960s, where she built a beautiful life rooted in love, family, and tradition. She worked as a seamstress before dedicating her life to her home and family as a devoted housewife.

Maria was known for her joyous spirit and zest for life. She loved to dance and never missed a moment to celebrate with her family, often filling her home with music, laughter, and the comforting smells of a warm kitchen. Her presence was the heart of every gathering.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Isabelo Mendez, who passed in 2018. Together, they raised two cherished children, Iris N. Mendez and Edwin Mendez, who survive her. Maria also leaves behind her five adored grandchildren: Carlos Diaz, Sandra Cruz, Joel Diaz, Edwin Mendez Jr., and Marcus Mendez, and eleven great-grandchildren: Calvin Diaz, Jayden Diaz, Jaylanny Diaz, Ethan Diaz, Bentley Diaz, Sky Guzman, Alexus McLaughlin, Jacob Mendez, Jaxson Mendez, Kaidyn Mendez, and Malani Mendez, with baby Calia Mendez on the way.

Maria’s legacy of love, resilience, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She touched many lives with her warmth and kindness and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she graced.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 25th, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Community Funeral Chapels 798 Park Ave. Bridgeport, Connecticut. Family and friends are invited to celebrate her remarkable life and honor the beautiful memories she leaves behind.
