Maria Batista 'Yaya' Martins

Maria Batista Martins, age 96, passed away in her daughter's home in Bridgeport, CT on Sunday, July 26, 2020. Maria was born on October 18, 1924 in Fogo, Cape Verde where she resided until migrating to the United States in 1976. She worked for a leather manufacturing company in South Norwalk before returning back to her home Cape Verde in 1990. After falling ill in 2004 she returned back to the states to be closer to family. In her prime, Maria enjoyed gardening and smoking her tobacco pipe, which she managed continue doing well past her family's wishes. Survived by her daughter, Isabel Monteiro and husband Mario Monteiro; grandchildren Maisa Monteiro of Bridgeport, CT, Mario Monteiro Jr. of Naugatuck, CT, and Marlene Leo and husband Thomas Leo of New York, NY; great grandchildren Taniya L. Watson of Bridgeport, CT, and Mavrick H. Leo of New York, NY; sisters Carminda Andrade of Dorchester, MA, Cora Bairos of Norwalk, CT, Carmen Monteiro of Norwalk CT, Dinora Perry of Norwalk, CT; brothers Joao L. Martins of Brockton, MA, Orlando B. Vicente of Fogo, Cape Verde, and Ramiro B. Vicente of Santiago, Cape Verde; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents Quintiliano L. Martins and Teresa S. Batista Vicente; sister Clotilde Montrond of Brockton, MA; brothers Alberto Martins of Newport, RI, Jose Martins of RI, Fidelio B. Vicente of Fogo, Cape Verde, and Joao B.
