Reverend Maria Vicenta Agosto, age 85, the widow of Vidal Agosto, passed into heavenly rest on August 11, 2024 in Bridgeport Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Maria was born on December 20, 1938, the beloved daughter of the late Luis Rivera and Ricarda Rosa in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Maria grew up with a large family, rich in culture and strong faith. Her upbringing shaped her life's work. She dedicated her life to serve others with unwavering compassion and devotion.
In 1961 Maria married Vidal Agosto, they were happily married for 69 years. Shortly after their marriage they emigrated to the United States seeking new opportunities for their family. Maria enjoyed the beach, playing bingo, and attending her children’s softball games. Family unity was the most important thing to her.
Maria worked at American Fabric, and later as a paraprofessional in the Bridgeport School system, as well as the youth coordinator at Roberto Clemente School. Maria was also a District Leader for the community in the 137th district.
Maria’s true calling was fulfilled at her ordination to the Episcopal Priesthood on May, 28, 1989. She was commonly known as “Madre Maria” and was a trailblazer in her ministry. She served many years at St. Luke’s St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. One of the few female priests in her time, she broke barriers and inspired countless individuals with her faith and determination. Her pastoral care was characterized by a deep empathy and a commitment to the community, and her faith. Her sermons, filled with grace and insight, often reflected her belief in the transformative power of love and faith.
Maria also served on the Diocesan Executive Council [BDEC], c. 1987-1989, as well as Chairperson of the diocesan Hispanic Commission (c. 1991). She was active in the Cursillo Ministry.
Maria’s servant heart was expressed through her work at the Parish soup kitchen and pantry where she fed families in need by providing delicious meals and spiritual guidance. She is remembered not only for her remarkable contributions to the community but also for her kindness, her generosity, and her ability to connect deeply with people from all walks of life.
Her legacy will continue through the lives she touched.
Maria is survived by her son Carlos Agosto (Carmen Valle); daughter Wanda Agosto; son Vidal Agosto Jr.; she lovingly raised as a son Joshua Agosto (Odalys Acosta); siblings, Hector Luis Rivera, Carlos Rivera, Victor Rivera, Irma Rivera, Milagros Rivera, Elsa Rivera; niece Lily Rivera; as well as a host of loving grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and extended family who cherished her deeply.
Reverend Maria Vicenta Agosto’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
