With deep sorrow and abiding love, we announce the sudden passing of Javier “Javi” Fontan, who left us unexpectedly on July 7, 2025, at the age of 55.
Born in the Bronx on March 26, 1970, Javi was the youngest of five children to Rosa Fontan and the late Eugenio Fontan. A proud Puerto Rican and genuine Bronx original, he was a devoted son, a beloved baby brother, and everyone’s favorite uncle.
Though he never had children of his own, Javi treated his nieces and nephews like his own—with boundless love, encouragement, and laughter. He had a profound sense of loyalty and family that extended far beyond blood ties. If Javi considered you family, you felt it in the way he showed up for you, day in and day out.
A diehard Yankees and Giants fan, a boxing enthusiast, and the go-to DJ for every family gathering, Javi brought joy and energy wherever he went. Whether it was salsa, freestyle, 80s, or 90s hip-hop, he had the perfect track to lift the mood and get people dancing. His music brought people together, but so did his presence.
Javi had a rare gift: the ability to connect with anyone. His laugh was big and infectious, his sense of humor unforgettable, and his heart wide open. He could strike up a conversation with anyone—young or old, stranger or friend—and make them feel welcome. His spirit was inclusive, joyful, and filled with love.
As a confirmed Catholic, Javi’s faith was evident in the way he lived—through kindness, humility, and the way he united others. He welcomed everyone, judged no one, and loved fiercely.
Javi is survived by his mother, Rosa Fontan; his siblings; his adored nieces and nephews; and the countless friends and extended family who were lucky enough to be part of his life. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugenio Fontan.
His memory will live on in the music he played, the laughter he shared, and the many lives he touched. He will be missed more than words can express.
