Edward Augustus “Gus” Tisdale, age 95, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on April 24, 2026, surrounded by the loves that defined his life.
Born in Orange, New Jersey. Gus was the beloved son of the late Curnel E. Tisdale and Nellie D. Tisdale. He later made Connecticut his home in 1958, where he built a life rooted in family, hard work, and quiet strength.
Gus was predeceased by his six sisters; four daughters, Gayle, Adrienne, Stephanie, and Vanya; and his son, Alvin. He is survived by his devoted wife, Willimenia Tisdale, whose love and partnership were the cornerstone of his life. To her, Gus was simply the best man she had ever known, a man whose compassion first showed in the way he cared for his mother and who went on to build a home, a family, and a lasting legacy beside her.
He leaves behind his loving children: Alexis Tisdale-Horton and Eric Walker of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Earline Walker of Navassa, North Carolina; Brian Walker (Virginia) of Mableton, Georgia; and Priscilla McCullough of Atlanta Georgia; son-in-law, Dartez Scott of Bloomfield, New Jersey; and his godson, Eric Walker Jr. (Sheanna) of Waterbury, Connecticut, along with a host of cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who will carry his memory forward.
He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Debra Morton-Bey Nelson, Robin, Glendora, Joann, and Valerie Small; brothers-in-law, Tyrone and Timothy Small, all of Baltimore; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his devoted lifetime friend, Geraldine Caple of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Gus proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, enlisting straight out of high school. Following his service, he dedicated himself to a lifetime of hard work, providing for his family through positions at Carpenter Steel and various school districts throughout Connecticut, including Westport (Staples High School), Redding (Joel Barlow High School), and Bridgeport (Dunbar School), from which he retired as Head Custodian. He also worked at Fairfield University, Hall Neighborhood House and Stop & Shop. He took pride in every role he held, seeing his work as a reflection of his commitment to those he loved.
A simple man with a rich spirit, Gus found joy in life’s everyday pleasures. He was an avid Patriots fan who loved watching sports, enjoyed spending time conversing with his grandchildren, sightseeing at the beach, and never missed an opportunity to strike up a good conversation and listening to music. Known for his calm demeanor, he carried himself with ease.
Above all, Gus was a family man, the proud patriarch of a blended and multifaceted family. He loved deeply and without reservation, holding a special place in his heart for his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and extended loved ones. He was a trusted confidant, a keeper of secrets, and a man who valued forgiveness, privacy, and loyalty.
Strong and steadfast, Gus remained determined to live life on his own terms, fighting for his independence until the very end. His quiet strength, enduring love, and unwavering dedication to family leave behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
Edward Augustus “Gus” Tisdale will be dearly missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him, and by all who came into contact with him.
