Edna Campbell was born on January 21, 1928 in St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica, the daughter of Irene (Shaw) Wright and Charles Wright. Throughout her childhood Edna was a devoted daughter and sister, assisting her parents in raising the younger siblings. In her later years Edna would affectionately recall the joy of baby sitting her younger brother Luzelle Wright. Her love of her siblings persisted through the years, and even when apart, she cherished the memories she made with them. In Jamaica she met and married George Aston Evans with whom she had two children Pauline (Evans) Costanzo and Peter Evans. Edna was determined to create a better life for herself and family by pursuing a career in the United States. Through determination, sacrifice, and self- motivation, Edna was able to obtain a work sponsorship in the United States where she became a model citizen who worked tirelessly to provide for her family and contribute to her new home. At different times she cleaned homes and worked at Pitney Bowes in Stamford and as a nurse's aide. When she was not working she built friendships with those in the community and connected with other Jamaican expatriates. Her success at Pitney Bowes earned her accolades and sponsored trips to foreign countries such as Morocco and Ireland. She even purchased a home which she furnished with a grand piano to learn how to play. When Edna was not working, she spent countless hours in her cherished garden where she raised fresh fruits and vegetables. She was a skilled cook who had her special techniques for making ribeye, swordfish and her patented shot-in-the-eye breakfast. Most importantly Edna remained a devoted family member and grandmother. She helped raise two grandsons and was committed to helping provide them with access to opportunities that would continue the mission she began years ago. She was always there for them at the drop of a hat and would share family stories and Jamaican jokes. Whenever Edna was at a family gathering she was the life of the party only rivaled by her brother Joshua ("Renelle") Wright with whom she shared much spirited banter. Edna was always the accidental comedian whose bluntness and matter-of-fact personality brought humor and joy to those around her. Edna is survived by her two children Peter Evans and Pauline Costanzo; sister Ina (Wright) Curry; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In her later years spending time with them brought her untold comfort, joy and peace. She will be deeply missed but her legacy and impact will remain for years to come.
