Delia Z. Mestre, 86, a longtime resident of Bridgeport died suddenly on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at the Lord Chamberlain Nursing Facility in Stratford where she had been a resident for the last eight months. Delia, daughter of Simon Zabala Cordero and Maria Lopez-Lorenzo, was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. She was married to her childhood sweetheart, Jose W. Mestre Ramos, for 59 years. She was a devoted mother, foster mother to eight children and, after raising her children she worked as an early childhood educator for 20 years. Delia was caring, a fun-loving practical person, who had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life including her cups of coffee, and when asked "how are you today?' She would answer "como coco y no rancio". Delia is survived by her sons, Jose, Daniel (Nancy), and Eddie (Nick); two sisters, Mary Palmer Lewis and Amparo Zabala Lopez; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews. She always looked forward and enjoyed visits from grandson, Steven Mestre, his wife Jillian, and their two children Justin and Julianna. During the last years of her life Valeria Donate, Raul Gomez, and Dalila Reyes were caring and dedicated companions and friends. Delia was predeceased by her husband Jose, a son Samuel, a daughter in law, Carmen Iris and two sisters, Elvia Maria and Rogelia. The family is grateful to the professional and loving staff of the Lord Chamberlain Nursing Home for their care and support. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 10 AM to 12 noon at The Community Funeral Chapels at 798 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, after a prayer service, burial will follow at the Veterans' Cemetery in Middletown.
