Chard Monet Spates

October 8, 2000 — February 26, 2022

On October 8, 2000, at 11:28pm in the Womens Hospital of Greensboro, NC, Keith Ruben Spates and Charmel Monet Moore welcomed their beautiful Chard Monet Spates into this world. Not only did Chard enter this world with a bang as she made her entrance three weeks early, but she also entered this world as an independent young woman! She made her way out of her mother's womb, while still in route to the hospital! By the time the paramedics brought Charmel into the delivery room, Chard was already crowning and pushing herself out. Doctors had very little work to do, she had done the bulk of it on her own! Chard began her elementary education at Saint Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT where she attended from 2004 until 2009. Chard continued her elementary education at Davis Street Arts Magnet School from 2009 to 2014 shortly after their relocation to New Haven, CT. Next, she attended Metropolitan Business Academy Magnet School in New Haven, CT from 2014 to 2018. After graduating high school, Chard began studying Public Health at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT during the fall of 2018. Ms. Chard Spates will graduate posthumously in August 2022. Growing up Chard was very active. She enjoyed playing tennis; competitive swimming lessons in preparation for swim team; ran track for Hillhouse Highschool; roller skated and traveled. At a very young age, Chard showed an inclination towards Science. She would often experiment with different products while at her late grandmother Earnestine's home by mixing ingredients to create beauty products and slime. With this organic affinity to Science, it was no surprise that she participated in the Yale Girls Science Investigations, and she chose Public Health as her field of study. Chard was also an extremely fearless and independent child. At four years old, and during swimming lessons she would dive into very deep water without any hesitation. From a young age, she also loved roller coasters and amusement parks. Although her mom was too afraid to ride roller coasters, Chard was not. Without hesitation, and, at every opportunity Chard would ride roller coasters alone, or with a friend. Chard's fearlessness and maturity exuded her confidence to fly alone for the first time at age nine. While visiting Orlando with aunt Tonya Bass, Chard declined to fly home with her mother. Instead, she begged Charmel for her to remain at Walt Disney World so she could continue to enjoy more time with family and the amusement parks. Chard excelled academically in high school and college. She was very athletically inclined in tennis and track. During high school, Chard ran track, and she also participated in a summer tennis league program in upstate New York where she excelled even after being away from the sport for some time. Chard had an entrepreneurial spirit, she helped grandmother Earnestine manage the concession stand during her high school sporting events. While in college, Chard worked for Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) Residential Life, SCSU Student Health Center and Marrakech, Inc. Also, she maintained a good academic standing. While at SCSU, Chard befriended numerous wonderful individuals with whom she enjoyed great experiences and adventures such as get-a-way vacations to Mexico.
