Bessie L. Smith

Bessie L. Smith, age 55 of Bridgeport, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at Yale New Haven Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Bessie was born September 23, 1964 in Bridgeport, CT., the daughter of Sarah E. (Murphy) Whitaker.and the late Armstead Whitaker. Bessie was a loving and dedicated, daughter, sister, mother, and friend to many. She graduated from Central High School in 1982 and went on to earn a certificate in business from the Butler Business School. She worked for ten years at the Calzone Case Company where she made lasting friendships. Bessie retired after working over fourteen years with the State of Connecticut as a teller at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Bessie was also well known for her strong, outspoken, and spunky personality. Through any hardship, Bessie always remained optimistic and stayed true to herself. She will be remembered most for how giving and caring she was, along with her awesome sense of humor. Bessie had a smile that could brighten any room and a laugh that filled you will happiness. She will be missed deeply by all who had the honor of knowing her. In addition to her father, Bessie was predeceased by her son, Terelle L. Whitaker, and her sister, Crystal S. Whitaker. Bessie is survived by her Mother, two daughters, Shaileen Smith & Neveah Hancock; sister, Diane Whitaker, and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who will cherish her memory. A Home Going Service honoring Bessie will be held Tuesday, October 29, 2019 from 6pm-8pm at Shiloh Baptist Church, 477 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT. 06604. Interment will be held privately.
